What Was Your First Childhood Memory?

Like last week’s episode we are going to tap into our childhood selves and delve into our first memories! Just like what we wanted to be when we grew up shapes who we become, our first moments do exactly the same.
Kathy and Jason share with us all what those moments were for them, and we encourage you to recollect your memories and take the time to introspect on yourselves!

Are You Feeling Psychologically Safe?

Up until a few months ago I had never heard the term psychological safety, and I’m guessing you might not have either.

The more I’ve thought about it, and experienced it myself, the more convinced I am of its vital importance for you to be authentically you.

I’m not going to lie to you, sometimes it’s scary as hell letting people actually see who we are, and if you are like most people you’ve probably tried before and got slapped up side the head.

I’ve been slapped up side the head many time when I’ve shared too much, or with the wrong group and I don’t need that since I bang my head against the wall myself without needing any help 😉

I recently took a story writing course from Roundtable Companies, where I wrote a short story about a part of my life. I was in a small group of people where I felt safe.

Over the course, I dove deeper into myself and experiences I’ve had that make me who I am and wrote it down. In fact, I shared some things in the short story I have never vocalized to anyone.

Why did I do this?

I felt safe.

Parts of my story I am comfortable sharing with the world on social media, and others I’m not. But I can tell you going through the process, and sharing with people I trust brought me healing and helped me understand myself better.

Do you have a safe place where you can be uniquely you?

Most people don’t, which is why I am starting a Facebook group where you can have that psychological safety. This allows us to have two-way communication in a safe place with like minded people. It’s these sort of communities where you can really feel safe and share.

Join now and we will get going formally the first part of June: https://www.facebook.com/groups/beinguniquely

And if you want to learn more about psychological safety, tune into this recent podcast I did with Gen and Corey from Roundtable Companies: https://jasonmefford.com/jammingwithjason270/

If you saw my posts about facing fears, I did a whole podcast episode on it that dropped this week.

You probably know what a knuckle sandwich is, but what’s a suck it sandwich? Listen and learn, since as usual there is a story behind the title.

E273 Feed Fear a Suck It Sandwich

You probably know what a knuckle sandwich is, but what’s a suck it sandwich? Listen and learn, since as usual there is a story behind the title.

Whether you believe it or not, much of your life is spent in fear, worry, being scared, etc… that shows up when you are triggered and move into fight, flight or freeze mode. Don’t believe me, but when you are angry, anxious or avoiding… those are all rooted in fear.

What you really want is usually on the other side of fear.

In this #jammingwithjason #podcast I share some of my fears and how I was able to push through. Riding a bull, getting a straight edge razor shave from a barber, and scuba diving even when I had a fear of drowning.

We either push through fear, or we sit on the sidelines, waiting, waiting, waiting… afraid while life passes us by.

And when you push through, you release the fear and can move on with your life. Pushing through can also lead to some of the most exhilarating and surreal moments of our life.

What scares you that you can push through this week?

What Did You Want to Be When You Grew Up?

Today we discuss what we were like as children and how those older dreams and ideas helped to shape the people that we became.
We all may not have become exactly what we thought we would, but regardless of that outcome, there are probably many ways in which those experiences shaped you just as it had us.

This week I did something that scared the hell out of me… and I didn’t die.

This week I did something that scared the hell out of me… and I didn’t die.

Maybe it’s too many mob movies, but I have always been terrified of having a barber give me a shave with a straight edge razor.

It’s very vulnerable to allow someone else to have a razor sharp knife sliding it along your neck.

One slip, and well you know how that can end… Sweeney Todd style.

I’ve been growing a little beard and have been struggling to get it just the way I want it and finally admitted I needed a little help, so I took the advise of my sweet wife and scheduled a time at Guys and Dolls Salon with Nick Perry.

It was amazing.

Not only did Nick show me how to better care for my facial hair, he gave me a little trim, straighten out my annoying curls, and manly pampering of the full shave treatment.

And of course, he made the perfect joke just before starting of having done this once before, and he had a bandaid.

My kind of guy.

Did I really have anything to be scared of? Absolutely not.

I found a professional that I know, like and trust. He was trained to do this, has done it many times before, and I was sure I was safe with him.

After all, lots of men get a barber shave everyday and don’t have their throats slit, right?

When I got out of my comfort zone and faced my fear, I learned something and am now stronger for having done something that scared me.

We either push through fear, or we sit on the sidelines, waiting, waiting, waiting… afraid while life passes us by.

And when you push through, you release the fear and can move on with your life.

I did, and I’ll be back to see Nick many more times.

And having the right mindset practices and conditioning really helped too. I didn’t even freak out or feel any anxiety.

That’s why I practice each day and share how you can do it too 🙂

I feel an episode about this coming soon. Stay tuned.

What can you do this week to push through one of your fears?

E272 Music Brings Us Together with Christian Swain

Today’s guest is Christian Swain, CEO of Pantheon Podcasts. This is one of those episodes where I get to geek out talking, and laughing about a lot of different topics with Christian (my brother from another mother) where the theme throughout is, you guessing it, music.

Just a few things we discuss: how rock n roll music and the counter culture of the 1960s has become the underlying culture of today, the revolution we are seeing now, how music brings us together regardless of our differences, the Rock N Roll Hall of Fame, Weird Al, Weird Christian, Weird Jason, and so much more.

And with 90 different podcast channels produced by Pantheon Podcasts you will find one you love at: http://pantheonpodcasts.com/ and my favorite “Rock N Roll Archaeology” podcast where Christian is the head archeologist showing how music, technology and culture collide in the last half of the 20th century: http://pantheonpodcasts.com/rock-n-roll-archaeology

Active Listening and Asking Powerful Questions with Corey Blake

When people talk, do you actively listen without judgement? Are you asking questions because you are curious?

We are excited to have Corey Blake back with us to discuss how those two things can really make a huge difference in your relationships and your own growth. As with all #fireandearthpodcast episodes we go some places you might not be expecting: pain creates growth, how sometimes the questions we ask are judgmental and how to phrase it differently so others feel psychologically safe to share and be vulnerable.

Are You Pushing Down Your Feelings??

Do you fear being seen as a failure, or not measuring up? Most people do.

In this week’s podcast we talk about the male perspective of relationships and why so many men seem like they aren’t present and aren’t in the game with their relationship. Believe it or not, but most men have been taught to push down and repress our feelings as little boys, and that shows up usually even as men.

This is a must listen episode for men, and for women who love and are in relationships with men.

Learn how Israel was able to overcome a debilitating depression by realizing he couldn’t do it by himself, and ways he was able to pull himself out of it, along with practical tips and steps that are helping so many other men.

And at the end of the day, what really matters is the people we love and the connection we can make with others when we learn how to be vulnerable and be ourselves.
